Feel The

Beat

from

April 26 is World Intellectual Property Day, this year under the motto Feel the beat of IP. World IP Day draws attention to the special role and importance of intellectual property rights in the world.

FeeL the Beat of IP

This year’s World IP Day is themed “Feel the Beat of IP” and focuses on the central role of copyright and neighboring rights in the music industry. The WIPO campaign aims to show how IP laws empower creators, innovators and companies to develop, protect and fairly remunerate new musical ideas. With an extensive social media kit, competitions such as the Youth Video Competition, global events and practical guides, World IP Day 2025 offers a wide range of opportunities for participation and networking. Numerous trade mark offices worldwide offer events, seminars and information on World IP Day, including the DPMA . An overview can be found at WIPO.

Key messages of this year’s motto

  • Music is a universal form of creative expression. Intellectual property laws play a crucial role in promoting a vibrant and diverse musical landscape that brings music into our lives.
  • The protection of intellectual property laws warrants fair compensation for those who create music. This encourages the creativity and innovation that inspires everyone, everywhere.
  • Intellectual property helps to increase the presence of music beyond its own field. The range of intellectual property laws is extremely diverse and includes film, entertainment, technology, fashion, video games and consumer goods. Cross-industry links to music are a key factor in driving economic growth through creative synergies and innovation.
  • On World Intellectual Property Day, we honor the innovative contributions of creators, inventors and entrepreneurs who are setting new standards in music, bringing people together, evoking powerful emotions, driving change and inspiring a more innovative future.
  • WIPO, a specialized agency of the United Nations for innovation and creativity, plays a unique role in promoting creativity and innovation in the field of music creation. WIPO works with its Member States and partners to create a legal and policy environment in which inventors, creators and entrepreneurs can thrive.

The challenge of artificial intelligence

The music industry and the rest of the creative and cultural sector are facing significant challenges resulting from the spread of artificial intelligence applications, particularly generative AI models. In the past, these have often been trained on the creative output of photographers, musicians and other creatives and are now able to imitate creative output to an astonishing level of quality. As a rule, authors do not receive any consideration or remuneration for their work. If remuneration is paid, it is usually very low.

To demonstrate the possibilities that currently exist without professional knowledge of music, video and acting, we created this music video with generative AI.

In some cases, rights holders are trying to defend themselves in court against the training and use of the trained skills with the help of their own works, but so far with little success. Many legal systems have not provided sufficient protection for authors in connection with text and data mining, as artificial intelligence also offers enormous opportunities. It will not be possible to turn back the clock here either, as the technology is already too widespread and in use.

At the same time, however, artificial intelligence in the entertainment industry is leading to a decline in revenue for actors, musicians, photographers, authors, graphic designers and other creatives and artists, as traditional fees are coming under pressure from cheaper AI productions or are being replaced by them.

This is why many artists and creatives are calling for the disclosure of training data sets and fair license fees so that they can at least participate financially. In most cases, however, this will not compensate for the loss of revenue, especially as hardly any revenue is currently generated from the generation of content, at least for the content in question. ChatGPT, for example, allows you to create texts and images free of charge. In any case, an international solution must be found to remunerate creative people for their services, without which such AI would not be possible. At the same time, however, the further development of artificial intelligence must also be possible. Bringing the two into meaningful harmony is an enormous legal policy challenge that organizations like WIPO must address.

Time to Feel the Beat of IP

World IP Day highlights the relevance of intellectual property for creatives and companies. The technological development of artificial intelligence is leading to dramatic disruptions in existing law, exploitation and licensing models, replacing services of creatives previously learned from AI. It is time to revise the existing framework conditions for creatives to enable them to create their work and make a living from it. It’s time for Feel the beat of IP.
