This year, the focus is on sport. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-der-world-ip-day-2026-und-die-kraft-der-schutzrechte-im-sport\">World IP Day 2026 and the power of IP rights in sport<\/h2>\n\n<p>This year&#8217;s World Intellectual Property Day is themed &#8220;IP and Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate!&#8221; and focuses on the central role of patents, trademarks, designs and copyright in the <a href=\"https:\/\/kpw.law\/thema\/sport-und-fitness\/\" id=\"6406\">sports industry <\/a>. With its campaign, WIPO wants to show how IP laws enable innovators, sports organizations and creatives to develop, protect and commercially exploit new ideas. With an extensive social media kit, the youth video competition &#8220;Game Changers: IP powering Sports Innovation&#8221; and global events, World IP Day 2026 offers a wide range of opportunities for participation and networking. An overview of all activities can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wipo.int\/en\/web\/ipday\/create-your-campaign\">WIPO website<\/a>.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The central messages of this year&#8217;s motto<\/h2>\n\n<p>Sport is a universal language, but there is much more behind every competition than just talent and training. WIPO emphasizes that IP rights secure the economic foundation of sport while promoting technological innovations that enable athletic excellence in the first place. IP protection warrants fair remuneration for those who develop sports equipment, create club identities or produce and broadcast sporting events. At the same time, IP helps to increase the presence of sport far beyond the playing field: the sports industry influences sectors such as fashion, entertainment, media, health, gaming and consumer goods. These cross-industry connections are a key driver of economic growth through creative synergies and innovation.    <\/p>\n\n<p>On World IP Day, WIPO honors the innovative contributions of inventors, designers, creators and entrepreneurs working behind the scenes of sport, setting new standards and making sport accessible worldwide. As the United Nations specialized agency for innovation and creativity, WIPO works with its Member States and partners to create a legal and policy environment in which these players can thrive. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">IP in the sports business: patents, trademarks, designs and copyright<\/h2>\n\n<p>A single sports shoe illustrates how many property rights can interact in practice. <a href=\"https:\/\/kpw.law\/rechtsgebiet\/gebrauchsmuster-und-patentrecht\/\" id=\"1078\">Patents <\/a>protect the underlying technologies, for example for cushioning or the use of materials. <a href=\"https:\/\/kpw.law\/rechtsgebiet\/designrecht\/\" id=\"567\">Design rights <\/a>protect the external appearance. <a href=\"https:\/\/kpw.law\/rechtsgebiet\/markenrecht\/\" id=\"209\">Trademarks <\/a>represent the identity of the manufacturer and distinguish its products from those of its competitors. Finally, <a href=\"https:\/\/kpw.law\/rechtsgebiet\/urheberrecht\/\" id=\"284\">copyright <\/a>covers the advertising and audiovisual content with which the product is marketed. The same principle applies to the entire sports industry.  <\/p>\n\n<p>Strong trademarks create customer loyalty and achieve premium prices. They are valuable assets that significantly determine the revenue and growth of a club or association. Copyright-related property rights, in particular the laws of broadcasting companies, generate the income that makes cost-intensive broadcasting of sporting events around the world possible in the first place. Licensing and sponsorship agreements based on IP rights also secure the economic development of the entire sector, as they finance major events, infrastructure and the promotion of young talent.   <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Illegal streaming endangers sport<\/h2>\n\n<p>On the occasion of World IP Day 2026, WIPO is making an explicit appeal against the illegal streaming of sporting events. Behind every sporting triumph are years of dedication and sacrifice by athletes, coaches, technicians and creative minds. Anyone who consumes sporting events via illegal streams is not only harming the broadcasting companies, but the entire sports system. This is because broadcasting revenues are the basis for sponsorship contracts, transfer budgets and the financing of sports infrastructure worldwide. IP infringements in the field of sports law are therefore not a marginal academic problem, but a real economic risk for clubs, associations and athletes alike.    <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Technological change: innovation as a driver of sport<\/h2>\n\n<p>From the development of aerodynamic running shoes and patented swimsuit materials to smart training equipment with embedded sensors, sports technologists are applying their ingenuity and expertise to develop better and safer equipment in the pursuit of sporting excellence. Patents secure these innovative advantages and create the economic incentive to continue investing in research and development. <\/p>\n\n<p>In the field of sports prostheses, it is also clear how IP-protected innovations can change sport: At the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo, around 4,400 athletes with disabilities used IP-protected sports prostheses to achieve their sporting goals. IP protection for medical technology innovations is therefore also a contribution to greater inclusion in sport. At the same time, new technologies &#8211; particularly artificial intelligence in areas such as match analysis, scouting and broadcast production &#8211; are presenting existing exploitation models with new challenges, as can already be seen in the music and film industries.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ready-set-innovate\">Ready, set, innovate<\/h2>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns v4-pattern-text-copy-half-col is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>World IP Day 2026 highlights the importance of intellectual property for sports organizations, manufacturers, creators and fans. IP rights are not a bureaucratic hurdle, but the engine that drives sporting innovation, makes identities visible and enables economic growth. Those who know their IP laws and use them strategically are in a better competitive position than those who neglect them.
