The BSI document deals with the potential and risks posed by generative AI models. The aim is to sensitize companies and authorities to the safe use of these technologies and to provide information for a well-founded risk analysis. Not only technical aspects are considered, but also organizational measures along the entire life cycle of the models.   <\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group v4-pattern-general-quote-box has-kpw-turquoise-background-color has-background has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60)\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-bar is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\" style=\"padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--70)\">\n<p>The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) is responsible for promoting IT security in Germany and acts as a central point of contact for information security issues. Its tasks include preventing threats to the federal government&#8217;s IT systems, developing security standards, testing and certifying IT products and advising authorities, companies and citizens on information technology security issues.   <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>  Types of generative AI models<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>In its report, the BSI distinguishes between three main categories of generative AI models:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Large AI language models (LLMs)<\/strong>: These models, based on transformer architectures, generate textual content. They are able to write, analyze and translate texts and are increasingly being used in chatbots and assistance systems. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Image generators<\/strong>: These models process texts or images as input and generate realistic or stylized images from them. Technically, they are often based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) or diffusion models. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Video generators<\/strong>: These models generate videos based on text or images. They are an extension of image generators, but contain a temporal dimension for sequence generation. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Opportunities for generative AI models<\/h2>\n\n<p>The BSI describes that generative AI models can have considerable potential in many areas:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Automation and increased efficiency<\/strong>: LLMs can generate documents, reports or code, while image and video generators support creative processes in the film and advertising industry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Improving IT security<\/strong>: Generative AI can help with the detection of vulnerabilities, the analysis of threats or the visualization of security architectures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Optimization in design and marketing<\/strong>: Image generators facilitate the creation of prototypes and visualizations, while video generators enable realistic simulations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scientific and medical applications<\/strong>: AI can generate synthetic training data, improve image quality or visualize scientific data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Risks of generative AI models<\/h2>\n\n<p>In addition to the opportunities, the BSI also sees considerable risks. The BSI divides these into three complexes: <\/p>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. risks associated with proper use<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n<p>Even without misuse, generative AI models can cause considerable problems:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dependence on providers<\/strong>: Companies are dependent on external AI providers whose training data, algorithms and security measures are often not transparent.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lack of confidentiality<\/strong>: Generated content may contain personal or protected data that is unintentionally reused.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lack of quality assurance<\/strong>: AI can deliver erroneous or distorted results that are difficult to recognize (so-called &#8220;hallucinations&#8221; in language models).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Automation errors<\/strong>: Language models in particular run the risk of misinterpreting imperatively formulated instructions and triggering unintended actions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. misuse<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n<p>AI models can be used specifically for harmful purposes:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Deepfakes and false information<\/strong>: Image and video generators can produce deceptively real fake content that is used to manipulate the media or damage people&#8217;s reputations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Phishing and social engineering<\/strong>: Language models facilitate the creation of convincing phishing mails or the imitation of writing styles for fraud attempts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Misuse for cybercrime<\/strong>: AI can be used to generate malware or deliberately bypass security mechanisms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. attacks on AI models<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n<p>In addition to misuse, there are also targeted attacks on AI systems themselves:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Poisoning Attacks<\/strong>: Attackers manipulate training data to generate erroneous or intentionally malicious output.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Privacy attacks<\/strong>: AI can be misused to reconstruct sensitive training data.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Evasion attacks<\/strong>: Attacks are aimed at circumventing the detection mechanisms of AI models.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary<\/h2>\n\n<p>The BSI report presents an analysis of generative AI models by focusing on both their potential and their threats. It offers a systematic classification of the risks according to usage scenarios and attack techniques. Companies dealing with the topic of generative AI will find valuable approaches here that need to be considered and taken into account when using such AI models.  <\/p>\n\n<p>The report differentiates between proper risks, misuse and attacks, enabling a structured risk assessment. The BSI also emphasizes the need for an individual risk analysis for companies and authorities before they integrate generative AI models into their processes. <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h2>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns v4-pattern-text-copy-half-col is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Although the BSI paper provides a comprehensive framework for assessing and securing generative AI models, the practical implementation of the proposed measures appears to be challenging in many companies. Small and medium-sized companies in particular may find it difficult to provide the necessary resources for continuous risk analysis and adaptation of security measures. In addition, the question remains as to what extent the dynamics and rapid further development of AI technologies are sufficiently taken into account in the recommended measures.
